Orienteering Taranaki has broken all records for participation in Secondary School Association events with 497 entries for the Rogaine at Lake Mangamahoe, our local forest. This is the highest number of participants in any discipline and possibly a record for New Zealand. Sport Taranaki, who coordinate the secondary school events, is totally astounded by the numbers participating.
From the OT perspective, a big thank you to everyone who helped. This was a huge event and the potential for disaster was enormous, particularly with the 3 hour event finishing at 9pm (in the dark). The word "well oiled machine" comes to mind.
There were a number of firsts, the most notable being the huge number of entries. Of particular interest to me was my new found skill in TXT rescuing. Here is the transcript that ran from 8:40pm to 8:55pm.
Student: We lost on the lower lake circuit do we go up or around
Me: Up and south
S: We at redwood where nw
Me: Go up
S: We on gravel track
Me: Keep going
S: Up?
Me: Yes
S: Thank You
S: We still lost
Me: What was your last control?
S: We back thanks a lot
