Next event Rogaine 24th Sept

Using our Stratford map we are organising a 90 minute rogaine (choose which controls you go to within the time). Controls have points values so try to get as many points as you can without getting back late - you lose points after 90 minutes. You can walk, run or cycle, as individuals, pairs or a larger group.
Starting from Malone Gates, corner of Portia and Fenton Sts, Stratford (just along from the hockey turf).
Registration from 12 noon, mass start 12.30pm, finish 2pm
Costs for members and non members $5 adults, $3 students

Results are in for Simmo's Huatoki

Thanks to Simmo for setting and to all the helpers and control picker uppers. A good turnout for a tough event. The bush got a few people turned around and there were some long times. Also a lot of people ran out of time before the controls were collected therefore were dnf'd.

Rogaine route planning

Below is the link to a really good description of rogaine route planning by Thomas Reynolds - using a popular Rotorua map and showing good examples.

TOPEC event 13th Aug POSTPONED

Sorry  everyone, several things have conspired against us. The slip won't be cleared in time as there are overhanging trees that also need clearing, and the Council won't open the track until they get Engineer's clearance. Also there is a lot of rain forecast up until Sunday so the streams will be too dangerous. Unfortunately the courses can't be re-jigged to avoid the closed track and stream crossings at this late stage.
So we will postpone and advertise the new date shortly.

07 August 2017

TOPEC event 13th Aug possibly cancelled

We may have to cancel the event because of a slip between Meeting of the Waters carpark and TOPEC which is the only route choice for all courses. We will check the area later in the week and if the Council still has it taped off we will have to cancel. More rain is forecast.....
Check back here later in the week.

03 August 2017

Next Event TOPEC Sunday 13th August

3 courses by Jason, another of our keen juniors. Something to test beginners and experienced orienteers alike. Help available to new families and groups.

Starting from the Meeting of the Waters carpark (just before Hydro Rd and TOPEC if driving from New Plymouth). Starts between 12 noon and 1pm, course closes 2pm
Normal event fees apply

Changes to mapping styles

The IOF has agreed a new mapping specification for standard orienteering events. Over the next few years you will run on a mixture of old (ISOM 2000) and new (ISOM 2017) mapping. The organisers will make it clear what you are going to get at an event. Sprints are covered by a different set of symbols.

Of particular note is the change for a water trough (to a blue asterisk) and a water tank (to a hollow blue square). Also, mappers may use a green dashed line for a vegetation boundary, or the original black dots, but not both on the same map. Other changes are more subtle.

Download “Changes to our Maps” as a printable information sheet (PDF 537KB)

Orienteering Taranaki does not have any changed maps at this stage, but those going to away events may come upon the changes.

Te Henui results 7 May 2017

An incredible turnout of 68 groups today which pushed our map stocks to the limit. Thanks for setting some great courses Graham, you really shook us out of the sprint mode we'd been in over summer!! with a few gnarly control sites on the red course.
Results are here. Control 87 didn't work for the yellow course. Your results all show as mp (= mispunch) and I can't fix that, sorry. If you look at the second line of your name that gives the final time taken e.g. Thomas & Stephen took 16:28

World Masters Orienteering results

CONGRATULATIONS to Carey and Karl for their podium finishes.

Carey Nazzer   W55 1st/120 - Long, 3rd in sprint
Karl Dravitzki  M35 2nd/48 - long,   4th in sprint

And Jay Paterson W55 44th/120 - long,  27th in sprint
Annie Sanderson  W60 83rd/128 - long, 30th in sprint
Nick Collins         M65 15th/162 - long,  16th in sprint

These are all excellent results as you can see by the impressively huge numbers in each 5 year age bracket. [By comparison in a normal NZ Champs there would normally be 20-30 people in a 10 year age grouping.]

25 April 2017

Rainbow has been trolling the Masters Games pages

He's found these photos of Karl (on left) showing poor animal husbandry (injured calf) and
Jay showing a lack of fashion sense (no OT shirt!). And congratulations to Carey on her bronze medal

TSSSA Rogaine last night

Also a couple of photos from the briefing - who do you recognize??

14 March 2017

Results from Devon Sprint Mon 13th

Results are HERE. Note that Nathan, Carl and Rainbow had very fast times over the first few controls as those controls had been brought in already.
A comment about out of bounds = the olive green colour (as well as the pink vertical stripes), see below:

Control 60 in the building pass through (control #7 on this course, under the number 11) should have approached from the southwest, along under the verandah. A lot of you came at it from the north east, up the stairs, over the garden and up the fence - YOU WERE IN THE OUT OF BOUNDS. Please read your maps properly and take the correct route. These areas are OOB's for a reason, in this case it is a garden and should not be used for access because
  • the landowner does not want you in their gardens (even if they appear to be untended)
  • the mapper has made the call that the area should be avoided
  • you should be reading the map and orienteering by the rules.

Next Sprint at Devon Intermediate Anniversary monday 13th March

Earlier start times this week starting 4-5pm course closes 5.30pm
Start at Scout Den, Bonithon Ave

Rogaine results - Inglewood

We were a bit lucky with the weather. You can see it was a pretty good turnout, a few regulars missing and a few new faces. 4 simple challenges at various points made it a great event. We have a week off to hold the TSSSA Rogaine Champs so we'll see you in two weeks time (22nd March) at Kaweroa playground car park.
